There’s new DLC on the Horizon

Expansion sees a sub-Zero Dawn for Aloy

-

It’s time to wrap up warm as Aloy faces a fresh, frozen challenge in the first DLC for Horizon Zero Dawn. Announced at the Sony E3 press conference, the new expansion, The Frozen Wilds, will release later this year. Expect a new environment, weapons, and robotic creatures to hunt, ride, and harvest.

The standout feature from the DLC’s reveal trailer is the new wintry setting. It’s good to see the familiar map is being expanded, with Aloy back to traipsing around in knee-high snow. We can’t wait play further in this environment again.

PEAK TIPSTER

“I’m not here for glory, I’m here for the mountain, for answers,” says Aloy to the mysterious witch doctor who leads the tribe in this snowy wasteland. The mountain in question is a gigantic active volcano, its peak hidden in a mass of swirling black smoke and crackling lightning.

The mountain is, naturally, guarded by a new beast for Aloy to defeat – cue ominous roar and terrified screams. There are rumours this creature could be one of the ‘metal devils’ alluded to in the main game, giant robots that burrowed into the landscape as they attacked the Old Ones’ bunkers.

Given the huge success of Horizon Zero Dawn – it’s sold over 3.9 million copies to date, 915,000 of which have been digital-only – it seems Sony is clearing the path for Aloy’s return this Christmas. The scale of the success of this new IP for Sony would suggest that any new DLC is going to be a ‘big deal’, so expect more details soon on what we’ll find up the mountain.
