Looking more Good than Evil
Details for Beyond Good & Evil 2 emerge
THE STORY WILL BE BASED AROUND SPACE PIRATES.
Ubisoft has given us a look at early pre-alpha footage of Beyond Good & Evil 2, as well as explaining a bit more about the game’s storyline and mechanics. Given how long we waited for the initial announcement, it’s great to get another update.
The setting and history was clarified, and we’re told this follow-up to the 2003 cult classic is actually more of a prequel. It’ll only be loosely connected to Jade’s story in the first game, so fans and newcomers alike can come in on the same footing.
While the design will emphasise freedom, the journey will be hand-crafted, with everything created to have a purpose. The pre-alpha gameplay focused on Shani (who we’ve seen in trailers), as she dynamically flies to and boards an airship above a planet, engaging in combat with her staff.
The story will be based around space pirates and what happens to them as they journey across a swathe of planets in search of a powerful alien artefact. Whereas the first game had you playing as action reporter Jade, this time you’ll create your own character – a new pirate who will eventually become a captain. Naturally you’ll also have a crew, with creative director Michel Ancel describing this as a role-based system with classes like “medics” and “spies”. The crew can even extend to real-world friends, as you’ll be able to link up with friends and form an “armada” that’ll help you keep track of each other in the large spaces of System 3. See the hour-long stream on Ubisoft’s Twitch channel: bit.ly/bge2-stream.
Your journey will have you exploring a much larger portion of System 3 than in the more focused first game.
Airship-based battles will form a large component of the game.
