SHADOWS: AWAKENING

Banished to the shadow realm

PlayStation Official Magazine (UK) - - SACRIFICE -

As far as rude awakenings go, there’s not much worse than the one facing us at the beginning of this game: we’re bound to the shadow realm. But, seeing as how we’re both a demon and called ‘The Devourer’, maybe it’s a punishment we deserve. With no coffee or croissants to devour in sight, it’s off to munch some souls. The shadow realm is a dangerous place, so it makes sense that The Devourer isn’t too keen to stay trapped there for long. By chowing down on the souls of heroes as the hungry demon, you can absorb their memories and personalities – reanimating them into puppets that can walk in the real world.

You can, and must, switch instantly between both worlds as you quest and slash through this Diablo-esque dungeon crawler. Some routes may be caved in in the real-world, but passable in the shadow realm. In another instance, a large spider is protected by a shield that has to be weakened in the shadow realm before it can be flattened. There are pros and cons to both worlds, but generally speaking it seems that going it alone in the shadow realm as The Devourer is more dangerous. It’s inhabited by lots of ghouls, and you’ll be aggressively swarmed by more and more of them the longer you leave yourself vulnerable without a real-world hero to inhabit.

MASTER OF PUPPETS

Your puppets are more than just reanimated corpses. With pre-death memories intact, they’re still fully functional people with their own goals and ambitions. You’re able to have three heroes in your party at one time, and can switch out bodies with the press of a button. Some of the 15 or so available heroes will complement one another with their various skills, but others might not mesh quite as well depending on their affiliation and histories with one another.

The two-worlds system and the mash-up of party personalities in one body adds some fresh twists to Shadows: Awakening. Dungeon crawling is far from an underpopulated genre, but these new tricks will not only help the shadows awaken, but stay awake too.
