‘Democracy is dead in Douglas’

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - FEEDBACK -

SADLY, yet again it seems that democracy is well and truly dead for Douglas.

How can five councillors who live in Cairns defy the advice of Cairns Regional Council staff, our planning scheme and State Government advice and give the go-ahead to a development at Wonga Beach?

Former Douglas Shire mayor Mike Berwick fought hard and long against this development.

Now the daughter of the developer has talked five councillors into giving this unfortunate development the red light.

Have any of these councillors ever visited Wonga? Do they realise the burden that all these new houses will put on council infrastructure, let alone how many more cars will be using local roads, to say nothing of the highway from Port Douglas into Cairns. Let’s not mention the wetland. I fail to understand how local laws can be waived on the vote of five people who do not live in, or understand, the area.

Can Cairns Regional Council and the five councillors involved explain this to us?
