Hockey field battles
THE Port Douglas Hockey Club held the first round of the 2010 Champions’ Trophy fixtures on the weekend.
The games were held on Sunday afternoon at the Port Douglas State School oval. White Lightning team opened their Series Four campaign with a 5-1 blitz of Black Magic.
The firepower of the Lightning forward combination of Rex Hawkes, who struck three deadly accurate goals, and Bryce Caltabiano proved to be overwhelming.
Black Magic counter-attacked repeatedly through Jack Anderson and Guy Phongsunthorn but was held out by the defensive brilliance of Luke Stringer.
The second game, a war of attrition between Blue Thunder and the Red Devils, was eventually won by the Devils 5-3.
With the score level 2-2 at half time, the Devils’ commitment saw them triumph in the second half. Michael Armour struck three goals for the Devils, assisted by one each from Liam and Glen set up by creative play from Stein.
Blue Thunders’ goals came from the stick of Hali Tapim including a great tomahawk strike and strong field play by Josh Noonan. Next week Black Magic will play Blue Thunder and Red Devils take on White Lightning.
