Tennis champs serve up excitement
THE 2010 Port Douglas Tennis Club Championships were held in outstanding conditions and the stakes and motivation to play well could not have been higher with the inclusion of some new international and interstate entries.
The two-times men’s Port Champion Dave Shaw was not where he would have like to have been with a recent loss at the Mareeba Open and hot favourite Mew Adamson was beaten by Wolf 6-4 in the semis while Shaw was expecting a drama-filled encounter against the 2007 champion Johnny Riley but cruised through with a 6-2 win.
Wolf came out on fire in the final, taking a 3-0 lead in the first set and it seemed all a formality for Wolf to finish off Shaw, however he simply refused to go away and eventually won 6-4 6-4.
The ladies’ singles was a family affair between Joan and Kiani Bersinski with Kiani determined to outdo her much more experienced mum. Experience and determination eventually won through with Joan taking out the ladies’ singles Club Champion title with a straight 2 sets win.
The ladies’ doubles was another close affair with June Hall and Gabby Harris playing Joan Berzinski and Mel Andreason. Eventually the consistency and patience of June and Gabby won through with a straight 2 set win in a well contested game.
The mixed doubles was again a hard-fought match with both teams playing some outstanding tennis with June Hall featured prominently again with support from her partner Mew Adamson. It was a hard-fought victory over new club coach Herold Prins and his partner Katie L’Estrange with a straights 2 sets victory.
The mens doubles final was a see-sawing affair with Mark Fellows and Dave Shaw playing Johnny Riley and Grant Knight. It took a while for Fellows and Shaw to realise that they were on the court after losing the first set 6-0 and then 4-1 down in the second but reality finally set in and Fellows carried his ageing partner to win the second set 8-6. It was all left to a super tie-breaker with both teams not letting each other take a demanding lead with Riley and Knight eventually winning 10-7.
The Port Douglas Club Championships was a raging success and a great weekend was had by all the players and supporters alike. Special thanks should go the Tournament Director Mark Fellows and to Nadine Jones who donated the prizes for the winners.
