Assault after night out as police search

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS - HOLLY ROBERTSON

POLICE are searching for a man who attacked a woman in Port Douglas on Sunday night.

The woman was walking home along Nautilus St after a night out with friends when she was accosted.

Mossman CIB Detective Sergeant Trevor Perham said the assault was of a sensitive nature.

“He has targeted her on her way home in vulnerable circumstances,” he said.

Police are keen to speak with a Caucasian man in his late 20s who is of slim to medium build and about 175cm tall.

He has distinctive light brown spiky hair which is about 5-10mm in length.

“We’re seeking to identify a person of that description so if anyone suspects something they can supply anonymous information to police,” Det Sgt Perham said.

“We’re very keen to identify that person who may be able to assist us with our enquiries.”

Police have issued a warning to females to be careful on the streets late at night, especially after drinking.

“Girls walking home alone late at night, whether they’ve been out drinking or at work, should practice safety and not take unnecessary risks,” Det Sgt Perham said. “We live in a fairly safe part of the world but there are still risks and these things do happen occasionally.”

The woman has received medical treatment for her injuries. Anyone with information is asked to call Mossman CIB on 4098 2180 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
