Top guitarist in Mossman
ONE of the world’s most accomplished guitarists, Laurie Randolph, will be making her Australian premiere at Mossman’s St David’s Church next Thursday.
“Can you believe that Mossman is the first place in Australia to hear her?” concert organiser Herman Soenario said.
Ms Randolph, the winner of numerous awards including first prize at the Chet Atkins International Guitar Festival, does not fit neatly into any category.
She has written rap songs for kids, ballads, songs about global warming and genetic engineering, and a host of songs about the politics of her homeland, the United States.
However, she won’t be bringing her politics to Mossman.
“There’ll be a lot of Spanish and Latin American guitar, and some of her own songs about nature,” Mr Soenario said.
Ms Randolph’s Sea Suites has been highly acclaimed as “inspired and individualistic”, while the UK Guitar magazine said her playing “abounds in warmth and grace”.
“She has a remarkable poise allied to a thoughtful musicianship and sure technical command,” the magazine said.
When she is not touring as a soloist or as part of a chamber music ensemble, Ms Randolph teaches guitar at some of the world’s most prestigious conservatories and universities.
The performance starts at 7pm next Thursday, 26 August, at St David’s Church in Mossman. Tickets are $20 at the door.
