De­liv­er­ing for mums

MAR­GARET Legge is one of the many vol­un­teers at the Port Dou­glas Neigh­bour­hood Cen­tre. Mar­garet be­gan vol­un­teer­ing in Mel­bourne as a mem­ber of the ladies aux­il­iary when her chil­dren were lit­tle and joined Nip­pers. In 1994 she joined the VIEW club, a fundrais­ing body which sup­ports the Smith Fam­ily char­ity. Mar­garet ran the com­mu­nity par­ent­ing course at the Neigh­bour­hood Cen­tre and when that fin­ished al­most three years ago she started the new mother’s group, a sup­port group for new moth­ers and their ba­bies which helps women who have no fam­ily net­work in the re­gion. It is also an op­por­tu­nity for new mums to make friends, ex­change ex­pe­ri­ences, see the health nurse and build their con­fi­dence. “I do this work be­cause I love help­ing oth­ers and love watch­ing the ba­bies de­velop,” she said.
