Firies call for new recruits to help them out

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

THE local fire brigade has put out a call to potential recruits, saying more people are needed to boost numbers.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service Cairns Area Command acting superintendent Darren Welsh said several members of the Mossman auxiliary service had moved away from the area, creating a vacuum in numbers.

“We do have a shortage in Mossman,” he said. “We’re struggling to get applicants but we’re trying to more community involvement.”

Mr Welsh said it took crews 21 minutes to respond to a Mossman blaze last Sunday, not 45 minutes as previously reported.

“Several members weren’t available but four went there with the Port Douglas crew,” he said.

Auxiliary fire brigade members are paid for their involvement and must commit to attending a certain percentage of weekly training sessions and call-outs.

To sign up call Mossman station on 4042 5400 or Port Douglas station on 4099 6256.
