BECOMING a school captain at Mossman High School isn’t just about winning a popularity contest. First there is a written application including three selection criteria, then an interview process in front of a panel of four and to top it off, a speech in front of the year eleven students.

Undaunted by the process, student applications have increased from 20 last year to 33 for 2011.

Deputy principal Stephen Guthrie said that this generation of students are expected to have several careers.

“School captain sits well on your CV,” Mr Guthrie said.

The school captains have to be a good example to other students.

The school captains are selected through students, school administrators, and feedback from their own teachers.

A school captain needs to have initiative, know how to take responsibility and be good at team work. They represent the school at interschool sport and cultural events and including auspicious occasions such as ANZAC Day.

“They also have to be approachable to younger students,” said Alan Carrington.

Nadia Zigas said she has had students ask her advice.

“I had a student this year say I was a good role model and they were inspired to apply to be a school captain,” Nadia said.

Erin Jeffrey, is a newly inducted 2011 school captain who said she had always looked up to the school captains as wonderful role models.

“It’s not only about being a student leader, I just wanted help younger students gain
