Young achiever shines, spits and polishes way to award
JONATHAN Voss is all smiles this week, after winning the Young Achiever’s Award at the Tropical North Queensland Tourism Awards in Cairns on Monday night.
The executive housekeeper at the Sheraton Mirage, Mr Voss is extremely happy to have been nominated for the award and is thrilled to have won it.
“This is an industry that I love and I am very passionate about it. Tourism and hospitality is something I love being a part of, particularly in such a beautiful location such as the Sheraton in Port Douglas,” he said.
“The product in Port Douglas and the people really make my job a lot more enjoyable as I am living where I love.”
The award recognises someone who is less than 30 years of age and is working in the tourism industry and is someone who contributes to the development and professionalism of the tourism industry.
Mr Voss started his career by completing a Bachelor of Hotel Management, where he was later employed by the Sheraton almost two and a half years ago.
Mr Voss started with an extremely tough 12 months of training where he worked in every department of the resort including HR, food and beverage, front office, housekeeping, reservations and sales and marketing.
The Sheraton then offered him a full time position as one of the hotel duty managers on front desk which he held for another 12 months until he was later promoted to executive housekeeper.
“I run the laundry and the housekeeping at the Sheraton Resort. I manage almost 50 staff members on a busy day and have teams that clean the rooms and supervisors that check the rooms,” he said.
“I was extremely surprised to win this award. There were two finalists in the end I am so happy to have achieved it,” he said.
“To have the opportunity on put this accomplishment on my CV is extremely beneficial for me and my future career.”
