Port tennis a White-wash
ALEX White displayed skill and consistency in the finals of the Port Douglas Tennis Club’s annual club championships, taking out the open boys singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
In the singles, Alex’s opponent Ned Black showed plenty of power which led to him coming close to levelling the match.
However, too many unforced errors in the second set - including three double faults in a row - saw the match slip away from him.
With a combination of excellent baseline tennis and concentration, Alex closed out the first set 6-3 before taking the second in a tie-breaker 7-6 (7-2).
In the open girls singles, surprise packet Kiani Berzinski continued her good form from the weekend before.
With both Kiani and opponent Jessica Clapp in their first final, it was Kiani who was able to settle her nerves best and take the first set 6-2. The second set was even more decisive, as Jessica allowed a string of errors to rob her of any chance of coming back. Kiani took the second set 6-0.
In the open boys doubles final, 12 year old Hayden Barton played the match of his life in partnering Alex White as they defeated favourites Ned Black and Josh Harris 6-0, 6-4.
The final of the girls junior singles was very close, going to a tie-breaker in the first set.
Eleven year old Laura Coulthard took the tiebreaker 7-1 and then went on to close out the match in the second, eventually beating Emily Callander 7-6 (7-1), 6-3.
Josh Bellero had a good win over Michael Ives in the final of the boys junior singles, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.
The junior mixed doubles was a very popular event. Alex White and Bonnie Nesbitt were too strong in the final against Art Adamson and Kiani Berzinski, coming away with the win 6-2, 6-3.
Any juniors wanted to get in some practice for next year’s championships can come along to Halloween tennis on Friday, November 5 at 6pm.
