World’s best bug-zapper in town

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

COILS, candles, repellents, netting, zappers, carnivorous fish and a host of other deterrents have all been employed with varying degrees of success but now there is a new weapon in the arsenal against the mosquito.

It’s the Mozzie Slayer - and it is being touted as a saviour to long-suffering residents who have been forced to endure the relentless, annoying and potentially debilitating effects of the mosquito.

Invented and manufactured in Queensland, the Mozzie Slayer has been introduced to Port Douglas by long-time resident Brendan Cullen who admits to a “love-hate relationship” with mosquitoes.

“I love to hate the little suckers,” he said.

“The more of them we can get rid of, the better our community will be for it.”

A fruiterer by trade and entrepreneur by choice, Mr Cullen says he stumbled across the world’s number one mozzie catcher and killer four years ago while researching a variety of mosquito deterrents.

“I was checking out websites in America but discovered all the evidence was leading me back to Far North Queensland where the technology was being trialled and tested at James Cook University,” Mr Cullen said.

“It made sense because the area between Cairns and the Torres Strait is the most prolific mosquito breeding area in the world, with the exception of the Congo.”

Mr Cullen said the Mozzie Slayer was designed to mimic the human body in order to lure, catch and kill female mosquitoes without the use of insecticides.

Attractants included carbon dioxide released via a gas cylinder, heat, moisture, food grade lure blends and various light spectrums to trick the mozzie into the unit which is fitted with a catch tray.

“One unit in each corner of your property would give effective coverage and create a total ’no go’ zone for mozzies,” he said.

Anyone who baulked at the price tag - the Series 4 model retails at $500 with more expensive options available for commercial premises - need only weigh up the cost of coils and insect sprays used in a year, not to mention the risks posed by mosquito-borne disease.

“I have a family and their safety was the reason I started looking into these products. When I found the Mozzie Slayer, all I wanted was to let other people know about it because its results are astonishing,” Mr Cullen said.
