MY AMER­I­CAN girl­friend did her in­tern­ship at the Cape Tribulation Trop­i­cal Re­search Sta­tion about five years ago. I ar­rived there with my Amer­i­can girl­friend (who was go­ing to stay at the sta­tion) and my ca­noe. Hugh was in the lab and he told me to go ca­noe­ing and come back later.

Then at the start of this year I moved up here per­ma­nently from Port Dou­glas. I more or less be­lieve in what Hugh’s do­ing up here. I’ve al­ways done reveg­e­ta­tion work and I de­cided to spend the rest of my days plant­ing trees un­der beau­ti­ful Mt Sor­row. Why wouldn’t you? Af­ter all the rain we’ve had the last cou­ple of days you can’t help but think how beau­ti­ful it is.

I do a lot of ground main­te­nance at the sta­tion, ba­si­cally keep­ing things up to scratch. It’s a big place so there’s al­ways some­thing to do there, whether
