White Cap overruns Ann Sea downwind

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

THE PDYC Club Championship Spring Series of yacht races continued in steady 10 to 15 knot breeze.

The standard windward leeward course was adjusted to include a wing mark making a triangle course for the final lap.

Another great start from series leader Ann Sea set the pace as the fleet beat towards the windward mark.

White Cap edged ahead of Ice and set her sights on Ann Sea and as the boats rounded the top mark the challenge was on.

As the race turned downwind, in a surprising move Vic Petrus on White Cap was able to make the mark ahead of Ann Sea.

Poor choice of sails prevented Ice from maintaining her challenge and White Cap held onto the lead as the fleet reached down to the wing mark off Four Mile Beach.

Ann Sea had the spinnaker flying for the run to the finish but was unable to cover the ground to catch the race leader.

The impressive White Cap took line honours and first place on corrected time followed by Ann Sea and Ice. The series leaderboard has Ann Sea holding on to a narrow lead ahead of White Cap, Ice and Magic.

Heat 6 is on November 28th and with three heats still to run the series is still up for grabs. At the conclusion of the Spring Series in December the overall Club Champion for 2011 will be determined.
