Gymnasts to dazzle crowd
LOCAL gymnasts are putting the finishing touches on their routines which are set to dazzle the audience tomorrow night.
The Mossman and District Gymnastics Club’s annual Christmas display and presentation night is opening the doors to the public for the first time.
Around 100 gymnasts aged between four and 15 will take the audience on a time machine journey, with acrobatic performances incorporating costume, music, dance and gym routines based around themes of The Flinstones, gladiators, rock ’n’ roll and the ’70s.
The audience will also be treated to a glimpse into the future with gymnasts demonstrating all their skills and finesse on the various apparatus.
Club coach Sonja Zettl said the gymnasts were excited to showcase their talents to a broad audience.
“We have had quite a successful 2010, and I am very happy with the outcome.” she said. “The students can be proud of their achievements, and can now confidently show their skills to the public.
“They’ve been very busy rehearsing since our most recent competition last month.
“It’s the first time we’ve had costumes for our end of year performance and the first time it’s been open to the public so it will be a lot more theatrical than usual.”
The club has enjoyed plenty of success this season at competitions in Atherton and Mareeba, with talented teenager Bridget Osterman-Rowe also placing fifth at the state championships.
Gymnasts also took part in an in-club competition, a cartwheel-athon fundraiser, displays at Port Douglas State School and the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre’s 21st birthday celebrations.
There will be one more competition in Atherton next month to wrap up the year.
Division 10 councillor Julia Leu will hand out awards to deserving gymnasts following tomorrow night’s display.
The Christmas display and presentation night is a free event and will kick off from 6pm tomorrow night at the Mossman Indoor Sports Centre opposite Woolworths.
The performance will be followed by a sausage sizzle which costs only a gold coin donation.
