Top gongs at awards
TWO of the Douglas region’s major tourism attractions triumphed at the Queensland Tourism Awards last Friday.
The Daintree Discovery Centre won the Steve Irwin Award for Ecotourism for the second time in four years.
Treetop flying experience Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours were thrilled to win two awards on the night, for Adventure Tourism and Tourist Attraction and will represent Queensland at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Perth in March next year.
Daintree Discovery Centre advertising and marketing manager Shelley Griffiths said that the centre is excelling at being environmentally friendly.
“Tourism in this state is extremely competitive so to be recognised for this award is a great achievement,” she said.
“The Daintree Discovery Centre has produced so many projects to help the environment such as the carbon offset project and the bio-sequestration program so it is really nice to be recognised for this work.”
Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours managing director Sheena Walshaw was overwhelmed to win in two categories.
“Adventure is at the heart of Jungle Surfing as we take our customers up into our spectacular rainforest and literally see them fly,” she said.
“That sense of adventure immersing yourself in this amazing natural environment is what the inimitable Daintree experience is built on.
“And that’s reflected in Tourism Tropical North Queensland exciting new brand, ’Adventurous by Nature’ which we’re thrilled to be part of.”
