Survey in case Rex runs short

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

AVOIDING a repeat of the drastic shortages which resulted in Rex Creek almost running dry in 2009 is the primary motivation behind a move to identify alternative water sources for Mossman and Port Douglas.

Mayor Val Schier said Rex Creek was not sufficient to meet community water demands during extended dry periods.

“Water restrictions were put in place in 2009 to reduce demand and emergency measures were on standby if the need for a second source arose,” Cr Schier said.

“It is also extremely important that Rex Creek retains sufficient water flow to ensure a healthy environment.”

A report will evaluate the sustainability of source options and consider social, environmental and economic governance issues.

But the council also wants to gauge community perceptions as it plans to meet the water demands of the increasing population.

“Community input to the planning process will assist in finalising decisions on the most appropriate source options,” Cr Schier said.
