MOSSMAN’S Australia Day festivities are set to top last year’s wet celebrations with “A Great Aussie Arvo” community event which will award the best dressed Aussie.

“A Great Aussie Arvo” is set to take place at Mossman’s Indoor Sports Centre Grounds between 2-5pm.

Organiser Janet Goodall encouraged locals to come along and enjoy the great family day out, which is sponsored by Cairns Regional Council.

“I love organising the event every year as I am a born and bred Australian and I love just getting people together to have a good time,” she said.

“We have always had a community Australia Day event in Mossman at the park however I had to cancel a lot of the activities last year because of the rain.

“This year is going to have a range of family activities for all ages and will be held both inside and outside of the Indoor Sports Centre to avoid the wet weather.”

The festivities will kick off with language songs per- formed by local indigenous singers to recognise the traditional owners at 2pm followed by an Australian flag-raising ceremony.

At 2.30pm there will be line dancing lessons with Marina followed by Australian songs and traditional games such as three-legged races, potato races, sock races, egg and spoon races, comedy ball games and a tug-a-war.

There will also be an Australian colouring-in competition for the kids and a Coo-ee contest.

Kids can get excited as there will be a jumping castle, bungy run, face painting, an ice-cream van, lamingtons and soft drinks.

The festivities will wrap up with Division 10 councillor Julia Leu cutting the Australia Day cake after the judging of the best dressed Aussie and a trophy presentation for best individual Christmas lights and best street Christmas decorations for 2010.
