Celebration of strength, courage

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS - SAM SMALLBONE

STRENGTH, courage and diversity will be celebrated at the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre’s International Women’s Day luncheon next Friday.

SES volunteer Melissa Collins, indigenous artist Pamela Salt and Jo Dau from the Douglas Shire Aged Persons Homes will deliver a healthy dose of inspiration for the audience of up to 100 women.

Ms Salt is a leader of her Kuku Yalanji people, a driving force behind a collection of talented artists from Mossman Gorge who paved the way for many women to reach their dreams.

Ms Dau has lived in the Douglas region since 1959 and has shared in many outstanding achievements by local women over the years.

Melissa Collins wears many hats in the local community. As well as her responsibilities for pest management and revegetation for Cairns Regional Council, she is also a lieutenant for the Mossman Fire Brigade, and a group leader for the local SES unit and a leader in the Emergency Services cadet program.

“A century ago women wouldn’t have been able to do what I do today,” she said. “Women have made remarkable achievements over the years which has enabled us to have career opportunities rather than sitting at home.”

The International Women’s Day luncheon will be held at Salsa Bar and Grill from 11am on Friday, March 11. Tickets cost $60 per person and are available from the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre or by phoning 4099 5518. WOMEN in the Cape Tribulation area will get together on Sunday, March 6 to celebrate International Women’s Day at Whet Restaurant.

“We can’t do it on Tuesday, which is the actual day,” organiser Michelle Lamond said.

“Women in the Daintree work, even if their blokes don’t. So we’re having it on Sunday. We like to encourage people to get up and tell their story, how they ended up in ’the wild’.”

Tickets cost $25 and can be bought from Whet on 4098 0007.

Women in the ‘hood: the Neighbourhood Centre’s Marcella Nicolleti, Jenny Hill, Trish Jones, Marrylou Drew, Colleen Drew, Sandy Brown, Belinda Godhard, Jenni Baxter and Deb Delaney
