Underwater car park no lark for residents

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

DIANNE Harper is sick of her underwater car park.

The long-time Port Douglas resident has been battling council for eight years to get some relief from the regular flooding which leaves the car park in her Mowbray St unit under water.

“We don’t even park in the car-park these days, we just leave the car on the street,” she said. “The water must be calf-deep.”

Ms Harper said the flooding was worse than usual this week, but half the property was regularly under water.

“It doesn’t have to be a torrential downpour, just heavy rain,” she said. “The drains just aren’t big enough.

Ms Harper said she had had no joy in eight years of dealing with council.

“We’ve been told it’s cost-prohibitive to fix, but that doesn’t wash with me,” she said. “Don’t charge full rates if half the property is useless.”
