Netballer warms up for Academy
MOSSMAN’S emerging netball champion Angela Pringle is on the ball and is warming up to trial for the Marlin Coast Netball Academy in Smithfield this month.
Angela, 15, has been a committed Douglas netball player for two years and is training hard to fulfil her dream of becoming a Queensland Firebird.
“I started playing netball socially with a few friends in Port Douglas and fell in love with the sport,” she said.
“I would love to play professionally for the Queensland Firebirds one day.”
Every Tuesday night Miss Pringle plays centre and wing attack for the Douglas Jets B-Grade side in Port Douglas, on top of training on Thursday afternoons for her team and two hours training with the Marlin Coast Academy every Sunday morning.
“There are approximately 30 girls who are trialling for the team and only a few get picked, so I am up against some tough competition,” she said.
In her spare time Angela coaches an Under-10s netball team at the Mossman Indoor Sport Centre on Tuesday afternoons.
Junior coach convenor for Douglas Netball Sharon Beechey has coached Angela for three seasons and rates her as one of the region’s best players.
“Angela has certainly come a long way because when she started with us we had to teach her the basics and teach her from scratch as she had never played netball,” she said.
“She has only played three seasons and has become one of our strongest players. She is extremely committed and has improved her fitness through training.
“She started training for the Marlin Coast Academy on February 6 and I think she is a very dedicated and strong player on the court.”
The Marlin Coast Academy creates pathways for young athletes to excel in sport without having to leave their hometown.
“Angela has what it takes to play for the Marlin Coast Academy, she’s great team leader and a great netball player,” Mrs Beechey said.
Hazuki Kirby, Karla Logan, and Natalie Littler are also trialling for the Marlin Coast Academy team which will be announced on Sunday, March 20, at the YMCA in Smithfield.
