Raiders host sevens comp
THE Port Douglas Reef Raiders are pretty keen to get into the 2011 rugby season.
So keen, in fact, they’ve organised the pre-season seven-a-side competition themselves.
“We were expecting Cairns to sort out a pre-season comp but it didn’t seem to be happening,” Raiders vice-president Adam Calcraft said.
“So we rang around and invited everyone to come to Port this weekend for a round-robin competition.
“We’ve got $400 prize money up for grabs for the winning team.”
Four CDRU teams - Brothers, Innisfail, JCU and Wanderers - have taken up the challenge and will head to the Port Douglas sports complex on Saturday, where they will face off against two Raiders teams.
Despite fielding two teams and having the home ground advantage, Mr Calcraft doesn’t expect the Raiders to have everything their own way.
“Brothers are usually the team to beat,” he said
The competition will take the format of round-robin games every 20 minutes, with the two top teams battling for bragging rights and a psychological edge heading into the regular season.
The round-robin competition will kick off at 12 noon at the Port Douglas sports complex, with the grand final kicking off at 5pm.
