Former Cowboy to pull on Sharks boot
FORMER North Queensland Cowboy Brenton Bowen will line up for the Mossman-Port Douglas Sharks this weekend.
Bowen - who signed up for the Northern Pride this season and will play alongside teammate Gavin Crampton for the Sharks against Ivanhoes - will represent the Sharks when not on Pride duty this season and is expected to electrify the team which had a solid start to the season last weekend.
Despite going down 36-20 to Edmonton, it was a promising start to the season for the Sharks who could have sneaked away with a victory if they didn’t drop three balls over the tryline.
The Sharks were in danger of folding only a few weeks ago because of a lack of numbers but managed to field four sides against Edmonton - first grade, reserves, Under-18s and C-grade.
The reserves suffered a narrow 16-10 loss, the Under 18s romped away to a 43-0 win while C-grade escaped with a 30-26 victory.
First grade coach Trevor Cobb said he was delighted by the club’s revival.
“I’m ecstatic by the effort in the first game,” he said.
“They showed plenty of commitment and were unlucky not to win.
“The fact the club was able to field four teams when we were in danger of folding only a few weeks ago proves the people of Mossman want their club to survive.
“Having Brenton and Gavin playing for us this weekend will give the rest of the players a big boost and we’re very evenly matched against Ivanhoes, it should be a great game.”
The Sharks tackle Ivanhoes at Smithfield on Saturday night.
