Yachties brave wet conditions

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

TYPICAL wet season weather couldn’t stop eight boats from lining up to contest race five of the 2011 Poseidon Sailaway Club Championship Summer Series on the weekend.

With light breezes and flat seas, Port FM Mais Oui took advantage of the conditions more suited to the smaller yacht and bolted to a commanding lead.

However, as the winds picked up and the swell began to lift, her lead was cut back and by the second leg Magic and Ann Sea had passed their smaller rival.

An approaching storm from the south east lifted the winds above 20 knots and the driving rain made visibility difficult.

Three yachts (Karragun, Ice and Indigo) retired leaving Tau Ceti, Whitecap, Port FM Mais Oui, Ann Sea and Magic to brave the elements.

Magic again displayed why she is the boat to beat, crossing the line ahead of Ann Sea but only managed second place on corrected time.

With one race left to decide the Summer Series Ann Sea has one hand on the trophy.
