Survey to feel business pulse
IF YOU own an ABN registered at a local address, expect to get an email from Cairns Regional Council at some point in the next couple of weeks.
It will contain a six-page business survey which council says will only take 12 minutes to complete.
Most local business-owners will probably have that time on their hands, given the dire state of the tourism sector at present.
Council says the survey is “aimed at identifying issues faced by local businesses so they can be addressed in strategic economic development planning”.
“Responses are confidential and anonymous,” council’s economic development manager Fiona Wilson said.
“It is a practically-focussed survey aiming to get information about business needs and issues they are facing.
“Areas of focus include business development needs, broadband needs, home-based businesses and business confidence.
“The information we get will provide direct input into the development of council’s economic development strategies, business plans and projects for the next two to three years.”
However, Port Douglas chamber of commerce president Ken Dobbs said the survey was “puzzling”.
“I would have thought council would talk to the chambers of commerce before issuing a survey like this,” he said.
“All the local chambers have good communication, we would have been able to assist.
“I would think a lot of the information council is after would already be publicly available, through the Australian Bureau of Statistics for instance.”
