Plaque unveiled for avid gardener
THE creator of Nautilus Street gardens James Watson was acknowledged for his contribution to the community with the placement of a plaque in his honour last weekend.
Over 50 locals joined Mr Watson and Division 10 Councillor Julia Leu on Saturday to unveil the plaque with a celebration and morning tea.
Cairns Regional Council’s Douglas manager Liz Collyer said the plaque was suggested by Douglas Advisory Board member Anne Booth.
“James is one of the living treasures of Port,” she said.
“It is not unusual to see James at 6am or 6pm in Nautilus Street planting new plants and looking after the garden.
“His love and care of this special space in Nautilus Street has really made the area somewhere the local neighbourhood can be very proud of and can socialise.
“It was great to see so many of the local residents come out to show their gratitude to James for his part in transforming the site.”
The locals also used the day as an opportunity to celebrate Mr Watson’s Australia Day Award as this year’s recipient of the Cairns Regional Council Volunteer of the Year Award.
