Royal move

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

SOMETIMES developers can be persuaded not to knock down heritage buildings.

When they’re allowed to load them onto a truck and drive them into the bush, for instance.

The owner of the Royal Hotel in Mossman have been granted permission by Cairns Regional House to relocate the heritage-listed Jensen House, currently located next to the Royal at 17 Front St, to a block at Syndicate Road, Miallo.

This would allow owner Rick Williamson Investments Pty Ltd to redevelop the entire site, including a large part of the Royal Hotel, into a 1690m2 shopping complex.

A large part of the Royal Hotel would be incorporated into the redevelopment.

In September last year, council rejected an application by the owner to demolish the Royal Hotel because it had been identified by the National Trust of Queensland as being of “cultural significance”.

Both buildings have neglected and council considered the proposal as being the best way to save both heritage-listed buildings.

Jensen’s House was built in the 1930 by the thenowner of the Royal, who ironically shifted the hotel into Front St from Tresize Rd at the same time.
