Orchid Show in full bloom
LOCAL blokes will have no excuses not to buy a bunch of flowers this weekend with the annual Autumn Orchid Show kicking off.
The Douglas Orchid Society will be showcasing some of the region’s most beautiful flowers at the Mossman Shire Hall for the public to admire.
Douglas Orchid Society committee member Nada Petrasevic urged the community to attend the popular event and see what flowers locals have to offer.
“We have plants on display from both profes- sional and home growers,” she said.
“Some of the flowers will be examined by professional judges from Cairns and will be awarded trophies for their orchids.
“The judges will be looking at the colour, shape, arrangement and presentation of each orchid.
“There are a lot of tricks to making the plant grow in order to present it well.”
Douglas Orchid Society president Ron Savage will be available throughout the day to give advice to growers.
“The idea is for people to look and see what will grow in this region and they are welcome to ask us any questions on how to grow plants, particularly orchids and exotic plants,” he said.
There will be plant sales tables by local and professional growers, orchid displays and gorgeous floral arrangements set up.
Live entertainment will also be provided by talented local pianist Leona Skelton and the Mossman State High School music students who will be conducted by Jenny Guyatt.
Garden lovers can also get involved with the large raffle which will be drawn at 1pm which will include a diverse range of prizes including vouchers, wine, and food and of course some flowers.
“We would also like to welcome more members to the Douglas Orchid Society, we are only a small club but it is very social and we are always looking for new members,” Ms Petrasevic said.
The Autumn Orchid Show is free and will be on Saturday at the Mossman Shire Hall between 9am and 2pm.
