Surf club rates relief

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

THE Port Douglas Surf Lifesaving Club has won a permanent concession from the Cairns Regional Council.

Council decided yesterday to amend its rates-based financial assistance policy so council can provide greater financial assistance to the club every year, rather than depending on the goodwill of the council on an annual basis.

While the club has welcomed the offering, of a 50 per cent reduction on general rates and sewerage charges, club spokesman Michael Bolt said it did not go far enough.

“It’s pretty unsatisfactory,” Mr Bolt said.

“We were paying around $2000 under the Douglas Shire Council, and about $3200 in the current financial year.

“We haven’t received any formal notification from council yet, but I figure our rates in the next financial year will amount to nearly $7000.”
