Free ferry a huge success
I WOULD like to thank the people involved in organising a free ferry for the Daintree Coast this Easter.
To my fellow directors of the Daintree Marketing Co-operative, thanks for voting to ask Cairns Regional Council the question.
To Division 10 Julia Leu and Mayor Val Schier, thanks for your support for the idea, and for your help in making it come to fruition.
To the council staff, thanks for making it all happen in such a timely fashion.
I am always talking about dinosaurlike bureaucracy but council showed things can happen quickly.
Thanks to Vince O’Flaherty who tirelessly promoted the free ferry.
Thanks to the various radio announcers who allowed the free ferry some very good airtime.
Lastly, thanks to the Norris family - this wasn’t in your contract, thanks for allowing it to happen.
The free ferry, coupled with great weather made the Easter weekend a massive success.
I heard one business say they had their biggest day ever, we have not been able to book some tours because they were fully booked, and my café and shop has had the best weekend since Easter 2009.
Campgrounds have been packed, and the whole area has received a muchneeded financial boost.
It is the first time in ages I have seen business owners smiling.
The results highlight the fact that ferry charges do discourage visitation, particularly from locals in our own council area.
Perhaps it is time to look at some major changes to the way the ferry is funded and run.
In the current fiscal environment, most people choose on price, and this puts the Daintree at a major disadvantage.
Great initiative: the free ferry has led to a huge increase in visitors to the Daintree
