Home away from home for hounds
LIKE the saying goes, a dog is a man’s best friend, but many dogs and other family pets tend to suffer from neglect when their owners go to work or leave for holidays.
Local dog lover Kate Jordan is planning to put an end to leaving pets home alone by starting up a business in Port Douglas called K-Nine.
K-Nine offers dog sitting, walking and washing to local pets while their owners are away.
“Dogs are individuals with different characters and needs,” Ms Jordan said.
“I can cater for them, whether they need to run, fetch, stroll or simply socialise with other animals.
“I have been doing this for friends for a really long time so I thought why not make a bit of money out of it.”
Ms Jordan said the dogs are walked twice a day, are given treats if they are well behaved and are bathed if they decide to roll in the mud or sand on Four Mile Beach.
She takes care of up to four dogs a night at her own home in Port Douglas and sends them to the laundry to think about their actions if they misbehave.
“The dogs are generally really good, I have only ever had trouble with one little dog but once she sat in the laundry for a few minutes she knew she was being naughty,” she said.
Obe, her own King Charles Cavalier, has learnt to tolerate the new visitors in the house and is enjoying all the new smells.
Ms Jordan and Obe will travel to your home if your pet prefers.
“This is generally the case with cats because they are very territorial,” she said.
“So I am happy to check up on them, feed them and ensure they are safe.
“I think this is a job I will continue to do until my retirement because I love animals, and it is good parttime work.”
