Mar­riner’s Mi­rage vi­sion needs more work: Crean

FED­ERAL Min­is­ter for Re­gional De­vel­op­ment and Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment Si­mon Crean was briefed on David Mar­riner’s pro­posal to re­fur­bish the Sher­a­ton Mi­rage re­sort last month and be­lieves the con­cept needs more work.

A spokesman for the Min­is­ter for Re­gional De­vel­op­ment Si­mon Crean con­firmed with the Gazette that Min­is­ter Crean re­cently met with David Mar­riner and was briefed on the pro­posal.

“Min­is­ter Crean re­cently met with David Mar­riner and was briefed on Mr Mar­riner’s con­cept for the re­fur­bish­ment of the Mi­rage Re­sort and de­vel­op­ment of an ad­join­ing cul­tural and con­ven­tion cen­tre,” the spokesman said.

“Mr Mar­riner was en­cour­aged to en­gage with key stake­hold­ers in­clud­ing the RDA Far North Queens­land and Tor­res Strait to build com­mu­nity sup­port for his pro­ject in the con­text of other re­gion pri­or­i­ties.

“The Min­is­ter’s po­si­tion is that the con­cept needs more and en­gage­ment with the com­mu­nity and lo­cal RDAs.”
