Good to see town so busy

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - FEEDBACK -

the Port Douglas markets GOING back many months, we’ve seen business after local business close their doors for the very last time.

In the last few weeks this seems to have changed, despite the weather not having been as good as we might wish, for our welcome tourists.

Mid-morning last Sunday, I tried to park in the underground car park at Coles.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only was not one car space available, but vehicles with interstate numberplates were driving around, waiting to follow shoppers loaded with purchases as they walked towards their vehicles.

Likewise, a tour of the car hire companies showed their supplies were nowhere in evidence.

Equally encouraging at the Sunday markets were the different foreign accents agreeably drifting along on the breeze, even though there was no sign of a cruise ship offshore.

One of the regular stallholders who’s been living in Port for several decades said the last four weeks are among the best he’s experienced at the markets.

Additionally, tourist accommodation facilities are reporting near maximum occupancy rates.

Let’s hope we have a loooong tourist season.
