Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT - SAM SMALLBONE

ROAD runner Nick Carling scored a win again, breaking the Open Male record at the Great Pyramid Race 5km event at Gordonvale on Sunday.

The athlete finished first with a record time of 18 minutes 24 seconds and bagged a $200 cheque.

“I finished just ahead of Cairns triathlete and triathlon coach Joel Murray, who was hot on my heels,” he said.

Local runner Justin Whyte competed in the 12km run/trek to the top of the pyramid and back from Gordonvale.

He finished in 83rd place in a time of 2 hours 21 minutes.

Local athletes are now warming up for the Cairns Roadrunners event this weekend.

There will be a 64km Kuranda to Port Trail Run which goes through Black Mountain Rd and comes down the Bump Track to finish on Four Mile Beach outside the surf club.

There is also a 16km run which starts from the top of the Bump Track at 9.30am and comes down and finishes in the same place.

And finally there is a 5km fun run on the beach which starts and finishes on the main beach outside the surf club.

“It would be awesome if all the locals could get involved and support the athletes,” Mr Carling said.
