Crocs savage Trinity

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT - SAM SMALLBONE

THE PORT Douglas Crocs are proving why they are genuine premiership contenders with a hard-fought 41-point win over the finals bound Centrals Trinity Beach on Saturday.

Lead by the irrepressible Daniel Smith, the Crocs started the game slowly with the Bulldogs throwing everything at the boys.

Smith had great support from David Kruse who dominated through the middle and together with Ben McCartney, Mitch Nicholson and Luke Bloom keeping the boys in the game during the early stages.

When the old stager, Brad Cooper was injected into the game the whole team seemed to settle and gain more confidence with his experience and leadership.

It wasn’t long before the well held Sammy Boxall and Matt Shaw started to find some goals fed brilliantly by Timmy Karpany and Scotty Roberts.

Goalkickers included Boxall with six, M Shaw six, Daniel Smith, Timmy Karpany and Justin White all with two. Luke Bloom, Brad Cooper and Matty Manns each scored one goal.

With a handy lead at the main break the Crocs held off a resurgent Bulldogs with some fine defensive work from youngsters Mick Doust and Jackson Brown.

The last quarter saw the Crocs put the sword to the Doggies and run away with a well deserved 21-16-142 to 15-11-101 win.

Crocs coach Andy Viola said the boys played a terrific game and are training hard to win next weekend’s game to secure a position in the finals.

“The boys have been training very hard and have been attending extra recovery sessions on Four Mile Beach to improve their and the Tigers.

Brisbane have some really good players, the Tigers have a big player who is really good – I don’t know his name.

Jonathan Brown strength,” he said. “They played a terrific game on the weekend but we will need to win this weekend’s game to play in the second semi-final and secure the double chance and go into the finals with a good advantage.”

Next week the Crocs face Cairns Saints at Griffith Park. Goalkickers: Boxall, M Shaw 6, Daniel Smith, Timmy Karpany, Justin White 2, Luke Bloom, Brad Cooper, Matty Manns. Best: Daniel Smith, Matt Shaw, Sam Boxall, Timmy Karpany, David Kruse, Scotty Roberts, Jackson Brown.
