Cane loves the rain
THE downpour that washed over Port Douglas and Mossman has been sweet for cane growers according to grower and chairman of the Mossman Sugar Mill Bill Phillips-Turner.
“It has been a great amount of rain and we had 100 millimetres here in Mossman and it will be perfect for the newly planted sugar cane crops but we certainly wouldn’t want to much more,” he said.
“ When you consider that in April it was very dry - one of our driest seasons on record - it has been very welcome.
“And with the crushing only completed a week or so ago it really has been timely to allow the last of the crops to be harvested before the rain hit.”
