On board with tourism

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - BUSINESS -

TOURISM Port Douglas Daintree has two new board members and a re-elected chairman ready for action.

Chairman Gordon Wellham is excited to work alongside Sheena Walshaw from Cape Tribulation Jungle Surfing and Natalie Johnson from Flames of the Forest.

“We have two terrific new members and both with a lot of tourism experience,” he said.

“Natalie is on a number of committees around town and is well known and well respected and has a of lot fresh ideas.

“Sheena comes from north of the Daintree River and that’s her patch, she’ll be representing them and following in the footsteps of Laurence Mason who will be sorely missed.”

The new board will be focused on developing marketing and business strategies to increase tourism and tap in to international markets to keep the Douglas region as a popular tourism destination.

The organisation is aligning their strategies with major players Tourism Australia, Tourism Queensland and Tourism North Queensland.

“We will be following their direction in terms of branding, target markets and demographics but we won’t follow blindly,” Gordon said.

After a strong September/October school holiday season, TPDD is confident there will be an increase in the tourism market over the next 12 months.

“The Australian dollar is dropping, consumer and business confidence is rising, retails and car sales are increasing - economic indicators are all in the right place,” Gordon said.

TPDD will be busy focusing on the digital market, familiarising global media with the region and watching the external markets.
