TOURISM Port Dou­glas Dain­tree has two new board mem­bers and a re-elected chair­man ready for ac­tion.

Chair­man Gor­don Well­ham is ex­cited to work along­side Sheena Wal­shaw from Cape Tribu­la­tion Jun­gle Surf­ing and Natalie John­son from Flames of the For­est.

“We have two ter­rific new mem­bers and both with a lot of tourism ex­pe­ri­ence,” he said.

“Natalie is on a num­ber of com­mit­tees around town and is well known and well re­spected and has a of lot fresh ideas.

“Sheena comes from north of the Dain­tree River and that’s her patch, she’ll be rep­re­sent­ing them and fol­low­ing in the foot­steps of Lau­rence Ma­son who will be sorely missed.”

The new board will be fo­cused on de­vel­op­ing mar­ket­ing and busi­ness strate­gies to in­crease tourism and tap in to in­ter­na­tional mar­kets to keep the Dou­glas re­gion as a pop­u­lar tourism desti­na­tion.

The or­gan­i­sa­tion is align­ing their strate­gies with ma­jor play­ers Tourism Aus­tralia, Tourism Queens­land and Tourism North Queens­land.

“We will be fol­low­ing their di­rec­tion in terms of brand­ing, tar­get mar­kets and de­mo­graph­ics but we won’t fol­low blindly,” Gor­don said.

Af­ter a strong Septem­ber/Oc­to­ber school hol­i­day sea­son, TPDD is con­fi­dent there will be an in­crease in the tourism mar­ket over the next 12 months.

“The Aus­tralian dol­lar is drop­ping, consumer and busi­ness con­fi­dence is ris­ing, re­tails and car sales are in­creas­ing - eco­nomic in­di­ca­tors are all in the right place,” Gor­don said.

TPDD will be busy fo­cus­ing on the dig­i­tal mar­ket, fa­mil­iaris­ing global me­dia with the re­gion and watch­ing the ex­ter­nal mar­kets.
