HISTORY was made on Sunday with the Mossman Tennis Club winning the junior tennis squad match against Port Douglas Tennis Club in its first year.
Mossman won 20 matches and Port Douglas won 10 games.
Alan Lane and Herold Prins organised these first round of challenges which delivered some great tennis from some keen young players.
Lane is coaching about 20 juniors each Tuesday afternoon at the Mossman State High School and came up with the idea to challenge Port Douglas.
Twelve players in each team were invited to compete in Port Douglas and players were divided over three courts of their own skill level.
On court 1 our youngest players fought each other with a very close score: Mossman 6, PDTC 4 and in the individual games won by each team the score was very close 49 to 47.
Jack Elliot and Mitchell Budge won most of their matches for Mossman and Brianna Berzinski won 3 out of 4 matches for Port Douglas. In this division most of the players were competing for the first time and did a terrific job.
On court 2 the elite players of each team played their matches and on court 3 were the intermediate group. Both courts had the same results: 7 matches were snatched by Mossman against 3 for Port Douglas.
Blake Johnston who was invited to play for Mossman won all of his matches. With his big serves, he showed no mercy to Kiani Berzinski. Another star player from Mossman was Chloe Stokes who won three of her matches.
In the intermediate group Stano Pisot had the time of his life with four straight wins. Together with a group of dedicated players such as Bryan Herrington and Jai Miller who have had additional tennis matches for free on Saturdays at the PDTC, has paid off.
Max Brennan, Noel Emery and Marley Price, who all came from beyond Wonga Beach to compete for the first time with less than one year of lessons, did a good job. They have learned a lot and will become champions in the future.
All the juniors showed good sportsmanship and worked well as a team. They only have had two terms of coaching and are already at a high level of achievement.
It is the intention to start a new tennis club in Mossman. If you are interested to help to set this up and join the committee, call Herold Prins on 0423 917 503 or email him: firstname.lastname@example.org
Next events at the PDTC will be Open Junior PDTC and Ulysses Getaways Championships on this Saturday and Sunday.
