Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

A BRITISH tourist remains in a critical condition following a head-on collision with a truck just north of Oak Beach last Thursday.

The 48-year-old man and his wife were travelling south in their Toyota Camry when they were hit head-on by an Isuzu truck which veered onto the wrong side of the road just north of the Thala Beach Lodge entrance.

Rescue crews had to cut the couple free from their vehicle, with the man who was driving airlifted to Cairns Base Hospital suffering life-threatening injuries while his wife escaped with a fractured arm, cuts and abrasions.

A forensic examination of the crash site by police revealed that the truck had gone off the road into the dirt on the left hand side and then overcor- rected back onto the road, over the centre line and into the path of the oncoming car.

The driver of the Toyota took evasive action but was unable to avoid the truck.

Police have appealed to anyone who was a witness to the accident to call Sgt John Fischer at the Cairns Traffic Branch on 4044 8805 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
