History made in tennis tournament

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

CHLOE Stokes (Division 1) and Brianna Berzinski (Division 2) made history at the weekend by winning all their games in the singles, doubles and mixed in the Port Douglas Tennis Club junior open.

Last weekend the PDTC and Ulysses Getaways Open junior were played at the Port Douglas Tennis Club and 36 juniors competed in three divisions.

In Division 3 were 10 boys competing in two round robin groups. They played modified tennis on smaller courts. On those smaller courts it is all about control and agility.

Wonderful tennis was shown by Jack Harrington and Dylan. In their group they won all the matches. Jai L’Estrange, Jamie Hudson and Quentin Nutt made a very good impression.

In the semi-finals Blake Stokes defeated Jack Harrington and Dylan defeated Seth Gray. The finals was won by Blake Stokes in a thriller against Dylan 7-6.

The Division 3 girls Dom Lee, Nour Ahmed, Ebony Bland and Kira L’Estrange showed great potential for the future. In the finals Kira won over Ebony 10-3.

In Division 2, 11 boys played a knock-out schedule. First seeded Michael Ives was defeated in the semi-finals by rising star Max Brennan in a very close match 6-5.

Second seeded Bryan Herrington had a tough match against another rising star Jack Karamujic. Bryan defeated Max in the finals 5-3.

With the girls Brianna Berzinski won against Emma Hudson 5-4. Emma was in the lead, but with her experience Brianna fought her way back to a win.

Jack Glover and Josh D’Arcy made an impressive series of wins over the weekend, but were defeated in the boys’ doubles final by Bryan Herrington and Nick Cooper 6-4.

Brianna Berzinski made her second final win with Emma Hudson against Cassia Jansen and Fleur Prins in a good match 5-4. The mixed Brianna Berzinski made her triple with her brother Connor against last year’s Champions Fleur Prins and Bryan Herrington 5-4.

In Division 1 our elite junior players, Ned Black thought he would get his revenge over his lost attempt to win the triple in the PDTC Junior Club Championships last August. However, he had not calculated on the wonderful cannonball serves from Blake Johnston and the complete tennis of Chloe Stokes.

He did win the doubles with Luke Stringer at his side against Roy Smith and Blake Johnston in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 and the singles against Chloe Stokes 6-1, 6-3.

But in the mixed Ned and Kiani Berzinski had to capitalise against the combined forces of Chloe and Blake 6-3 and 7-6( 7-3).

That win led to victory for Chloe Stokes. She won with her double partner Laura Coulthard against Kiani Berzinski and Tahlia Blain in a thriller of a match which lasted almost 2 hours 6-2, 4-6 and 10-8.

Kiani Berzinski got a new challenger against her after her two-year dominance in the girls’ tennis. In the singles final Chloe Stokes made her triple against Kiani 6-1, 6-3.

Thanks to Ulysses Getaways and the Port Douglas Tennis Club helping to organise the Junior Open. A number of the juniors came from outside Queensland which is good for the competition here in Port Douglas.

Games are now being organised for November 18 and 19 and the invitational Mossman Tournament. If you are interested please contact Herold Prins on 0423 917 503 or email hptenniscoach@live.com.au
