Community support makes it great

Call to help set up party

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - HOT PROPERTY -

EVENTS such as the Mossman Community Christmas Party don’t happen without the hard work and dedication of volunteers.

Every year locals chip in to help organisers from the Mossman Chamber of Commerce, the Douglas Shire Community Services Association and Cairns Regional Council to ensure the community Christmas party can be celebrated and this year is no different.

While volunteers from the chamber, the DSCSA and CRC will be on hand to help out on the day alongside organsiations such as the SES which is hosting the free sausage sizzle, organisers are still in need of some helpers to set up the event on Saturday morning.

In particular, organisers need some assistance to help set up the many marquees and stalls to be used on the day.

Anyone who can help set up at George Davis Park between 6.30-8.30am on Saturday is urged to call Kraig Byrne on 4098 1277. LOCAL Dairy Farmers distributor Brian Dickinson and his offsider David Wootten are just a couple of top blokes who help make the Mossman Community Christmas Party happen.

Brian and David have been generously helping out for the past 10 years by donating all the water, fruit juices and soft drinks which are provided free on the day.

David said they were only too happy to help out because it helps to lift the spirits of the community.

“We have been involved for a number of years and we know that the support Brian gives goes a long way to help out,” David said.

“He’s not looking for any recognition in any way at all, he just knows the importance of keeping the community together and so he is happy to donate whatever he can - Dairy Farmers is also donating a quantity of product too.

“We also like to thank all of the other businesses and the army of volunteers who make this all happen.

“It’s what needs to happen for a town to survive - we must all stick together to make our community strong and in that way we all have a chance to survive.

“But apart from that I urge everyone to get along to the Christmas party because it will be a lot of fun and a chance to put a smile on the faces of all the kids which is the most important thing.”

Organisers Kraig Byrne and Jenny White are delighted the Christmas party has been saved thanks to the DSCSA and financial support from Cairns Regional Council.

“More than 1000 people attended last year and for some of these kids who come from disadvantaged home this is their main Christmas celebration,” Kraig said.

“It’s a great community event which shows the true spirit of Christmas is alive and well in Mossman.”
