Buzz about Xmas bling
CHRISTMAS bling is alive and well in the Douglas region.
Cairns Regional Council’s “Sustainable Bling” project to promote sustainability and encourage the community to get involved and make decorations for community Christmas trees in Port Douglas and Mossman has added plenty of colour and creativity to the festive season.
The Mossman Christmas tree went up outside the Demi View Motel on Front St last week and has attracted plenty of curious onlookers while the Port Douglas decorations will go up in a fir tree in Rex Smeal Park this morning.
Local artist Melissah Norris, who has worked with local children and adults and community groups to source the “bling” and create the decorations, has been overwhelmed by the response.
“It’s been fantastic, the community participation and extraordinary creativity that exists here is quite amazing and it’s been a pleasure to work with the community - kids, adults, community groups, it’s brought everyone together,” she said.
“The project has been great way for people to understand the message of sustainability, using things from kids toys to stuff around the house or in your garage to make Christmas decorations.
“From an artist’s perspective it all came out how I wanted to see it.”
