Fireworks fund fifi zz with just one blast
THE traditional double Port Douglas fireworks display will be downgraded to only one at midnight because of lack of financial support this year.
The Port Douglas Chamber of Commerce (PDCC) organises and donates towards the fireworks every year with one display at 8pm the other at midnight, with Cairns Regional Council the biggest sponsor with $3000.
However, this is not enough and where normally the community and businesses put in money towards the shows, PDCC president Ken Dobbs said this year there was not enough support.
“It’s a bit disappointing across the board because we asked for support from the community generally with collecting tins but we didn’t collect much out of that,” he said.
“Council gives the biggest donation and the next biggest donation is $500 - a couple of businesses have done that and good on them we thank them but it’s not enough.
“Unfortunately the two shows from previous years aren’t able to be continued in our financial position.”
With a decline in business support and the cost of fireworks increasing this means there will be only one fireworks display this year from Anzac Park at midnight on New Year’s Eve.
