Sea Temple Open thriller
PARADISE Palms golfer Ben Turnbull escaped with a narrow one-shot win in last weekend’s Sea Temple Golf Club Open after a determined fightback from challenger Ross Argent.
Turnbull held a handy fiveshot lead after Saturday’s first round when he shot 73 before Argent, who plays for Cairns, charged on day two to come within a whisker of victory with a second-round 74.
Graeme Lees-smith performed the best of the local brigade to finish 13th in the 24-player open field and finished second in the nett tally just two shots behind winner Daryl Pollock.
In the women’s division, defending champion Sai Lenz again took top honours despite being 12 shots behind clubmate Ruth Yelland after the first round.
Lenz eventually finished five shots in front of Yelland, with Nerida Wilson third a further three shots back.
Sea Temple golf operations manager David Roche said the tournament was very well received by the players, who travelled from as far away as Canada, the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane to compete.
“It positions the tournament very well to be even bigger and better next year,” he said.
