$6M FOR 5-STAR FACELIFT
Rydges Sabaya invests in region’s future
AMALGAMATED Holdings Limited (AHD) has shown its confidence in the Douglas region by getting to work on a $6 million renovation of Rydges Sabaya Resort.
Work is well underway on the renovation of the resort which will be rebadged as AHD’S new five-star QT brand.
The only other AHD properties to be upgraded to the new five-star brand are the flagship hotel in Sydney and the Gold Coast resort which launched recently.
The transformation is expected to be completed by May next year.
AHD managing director David Seargeant was in Port Douglas to inspect progress recently and outline his vision for the resort and the motivation behind choosing the region as suitable for the five-star push despite the tough economic conditions.
“We believe in the area and its access to the Asian markets in particular,” he said.
“The aim is to refresh our product and hope our confidence in the region entices other resorts in the region to follow suit as there’s some tired product in Port Douglas.”
The revamp includes a total renovation of the bar, restaurant, conference and lobby areas and introduction of a fitness centre.
Rydges Sabaya underwent a $22 million renovation in 2007 which mainly concentrated on refreshing the accommodation.
Mr Seargeant said the new-look QT held appeal for locals, domestic and international tourists.
“We showed a strong level of confidence on the Golf Coast and it’s attracted huge local support - the bar is pumping,” he said.
“There is nothing like what we’re going to do up here and we want to involve the locals, who also play a major role in our outdoor cinema which we launched earlier this year.
“Under the five-star QT brand, the resort also has more appeal for the US incentive market and internationally for the leisure market.
“The US and Europe are going to take a couple of years to recover from the global financial crisis but for Port Douglas to prosper we need to get back to focussing on the highyielding business.
“In the interim we believe the QT brand will have plenty of appeal to the domestic market.”
