NYE fireworks fire up again
PORT Douglas will now have a second New Year’s Eve fireworks display after a Herculean fundraising effort by Chamber of Commerce committee member and Salsa co-owner Rhys Bawden this week.
Owing to the tough year, businesses have struggled to come up with money they would normally donate each year to the fireworks display and even with Cairns Regional Council kicking in $3000 and the chamber’s contribution it was still not enough to have a second show.
But after learning the earlier fireworks display had to be scrapped because of a lack of funds, Mr Bawden made it his mission to get the New Year underway with a bang.
The local business community responded wholeheartedly, with virtually all the major resorts and restaurants chipping in to raise an extra $4000 and make the second display a reality.
Mr Bawden said his approach was simple, he just jumped on the phone and told businesses “you’ve just got to give what you can”.
“It’s been a tough year for most businesses and money is tight, but I told them all that we just had to have the money to make sure the fireworks happened especially for the kids,” Mr Bawden said.
“Before I went away on leave we had raised $8000 altogether but now with the extra $4,000 taking the total to $12,000 we will now be able to have the two fireworks shows as first planned which will be great for the town and for the kids because they’re the main reason we all band together and do this.”
The first fireworks display for the kids in Market Park will start at 8.30pm and the second show at midnight for the adults.
