Eco-cabs pedalling towards the future
GREEN means go for a new business venture launched this week in Port Douglas.
Aqua Bubble, Port Douglas’s first eco-cab business, is now on the move with the launch at the Sheraton Mirage on Friday.
New Port Douglas resident Mark Myers set up the business encouraged by the natural surroundings of the area.
“Port Douglas is ideal for the eco-cab, the weather is great, the streets are flat and everything is within close vicinity,” he said.
The new eco taxis produce zero emissions, featuring a 200-watt electric pedal assisted motor built into the front wheel.
They also come fully equipped with disc brakes, indicators, brake lights, front headlights, making the eco-cab a fun and safe way to explore Port Douglas.
The business has initially launched with two eco taxis with plans to expand in the future.
“We are also going to introduce solar panels to the cabs within the next few weeks, making use of the abundant sunshine here in Port Douglas,” Mark said.
“We will be running short trips from the Sheraton Mirage and other resorts into town and back again and we will also be doing trips from the Marina into town and down to Four Mile Beach.”
Sheraton Mirage general manager Lachlan Walker said he was very excited about the new carbon friendly service on offer.
“New initiatives such as this are pivotal to the success of the region as a destination,” he said.
“The eco cabs are an ideal way to showcase the destination. They are green, healthy and a great tangible way to experience the outdoor lifestyle here.”
They will be running six days a week from 10am until 10pm and Mark is looking for riders to join the team.
“It’s a fun job but does require a certain amount of fitness.”
