Joyriders caught

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

TEENAGERS are suspected of taking a car for a joyride after the owner had gone away for the weekend.

The joyriders caused some damage to the vehicle before parking it back in the driveway of the Mossman home from where it was taken.

Owner of the car Sharyn Casey said she suspects the white Toyota Avalon was taken by a group of young people known to her or some of their friends and has reported it police.

“It is very unusual that someone takes a car for a joyride and then returns it back to the owner’s home,” Mrs Casey said.

“We went away for the weekend and whoever did this has found the spare set of keys and then took the car for a ride and also caused damage.

“A number of the young people known to us, and their friends, at present have their L-plate licences and we believe they took the car while we were away to get more practice without us knowing and we wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for the damage done.”

Mrs Casey admits it might look strange that she has “dobbed” in the kids possibly known to her who took the car but it was because she was fearful if it happened again, someone could get seriously injured or even killed.

“Taking the car is one thing and of course I am upset at it being damaged which has obviously come about by the driver, or drivers, being inexperienced and then returning the car back to our home,” she said.

“But my biggest fear is that if they do it again or take someone else’s car, they will be badly hurt or even killed.”

Police are investigating the incident and the car is now at the panel beaters being repaired.
